Board Certification in Medical Illustration
(CMI), granted by the BCMI
The Board of Certification of Medical
Illustrators (BCMI) is an independent body
that administers this certication
program designed to provide the practicing
medical illustrator with the recognizable
and valuable CMI credential.
A CMI has successfully passed examinations
in business practices, ethics, biomedical
science, and drawing skills and
has undergone a rigorous portfolio review.
The term “Medical Illustrator” should be understood to include artists who are qualified by advanced academic education and have experience in medicine, science, art, design, visual technology, media techniques, and in theories related to communication, learning and management. - Association of Medical Illustrators
To me it's not just when you look at an anatomy textbook or video that describes the body in an educational sense. Medical Illustration is appreciating the things you can't see and beautifully describing them without a single word through a multitude of media: drawings, paintings, diagrams, photos, videos, animations, 3D models and Virtual Reality.
